John “Smoke” Brown has been a big play waiting to happen since he stepped foot on the field for the Ravens. If you have been following the Ravens this preseason and training camp, John Brown has been a guy who’s constantly raved about from coaches and players alike for what he can do on the field and the great skill set he can bring to an offense. That skill set has already begun to show dividends two weeks into the season. With the injuries and the QB carousel in the rear view, Brown is proving once again that he is a match up nightmare for opposing defenses and a deep play threat capable of smoking (wink wink) any secondary. Signing only a one-year deal with Baltimore Brown is betting on himself, ready to show he’s capable of being that number one target for Flacco as the season hits full gear.
Earlier in training camp, Harbaugh made a statement that Brown had exceeded expectations of what he would bring to the offense and that has proven true so far.
“He has been better than we expected,” coach John Harbaugh said. “Obviously, we’ve had high hopes for him, but [he’s] better than advertised — probably even better than what the tape showed, I would say. He’s been a complete receiver for us.” (via Baltimore Sun)
Fans have gotten a early glimpse of what “Smoke” is capable of doing when healthy and motivated. Brown has recorded a receiving touchdown in both games providing a huge spark in the passing attack. Flacco has shown he has a great chemistry with Brown giving him an opportunity to win one one one battles in key situations. Quiet off the field but an intense player on the field, Brown helps set the tone and identity for this offense that can gain big chunks through the air.
After playing aside future HOF Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona, Brown knows his worth and took a one year deal to prove he’s deserving of top dollar and a complete receiver that the Ravens can rely on, and who knows maybe invest in long term. Aside from the blazing speed, Smoke has played bigger than his size (5’11) and can win contested passes. His touchdown against the Bengals number one CB Dre Kirkpatrick who’s pretty solid, “Smoke” held his own and provided a spark showcasing his ability to reach the end zone. Aside from Mark Andrews getting his first TD as a rookie, Smoke and Collins carried the offense in a second half attempt to mount a comeback which proved unsuccessful. As we near the first quarter of the regular season and the stakes get higher, you can only envision John Browns role to expand. Brown saw a team high with 10 targets against Cincy tying Crabtree, finishing with 4 rec, 92 yards and a touchdown.
Ozzie Newsome & the front office made a commitment to revamping the receiving core from a year ago, and its beginning to pay huge dividends with Brown leading the group. The new acquisitions (Snead, Crabtree, Brown) have all experienced a level of success in the league and are out to prove the doubters wrong. Brown raising the stakes and exceeding perception, Baltimore has landed a number one receiver for the 2018 season. Fantasy owners if you have this guy play him week in and week out Smoke is legit. Once again when the odds are stacked against him, John Brown is proving he’s still a game changer in this league and he’s back to being a dominant force. WR1 check.
