Quick Analysis of Ravens Initial 53 Man Roster

The Ravens made a flurry of moves on Friday and Saturday to get to their initial 53 man roster for the season.  Some of the moves were obvious, some were head scratching, some made fans cheer, and some…just made me have to research what that designation even means!

Here is a quick breakdown of the initial roster:

QB – Flacco, Jackson, Griffin (Carrying 3 QBs is a bit of a rarity for the Ravens, but Griffin’s strong play and obvious role in tutoring Jackson made this an easier decision)

RB – Collins, Allen, Dixon (It’s not a fan favorite move, as Dixon is frequently hurt and has suspension concerns, but none of the UDFA RBs really ran away with their audition, so Dixon makes it by default, and Ravens will hope one of them makes it to Practice Squad)

WR – Crabtree, Snead, Brown, Moore, Lasley, Grant (Lasley makes it over Perriman, as the Ravens clearly want to hold onto Lasley’s developmental potential over Perriman’s 1st round status.  Janarion Grant didn’t run away with the KR/PR job, but got more snaps than White and was a more accomplished college returner)

TE – Hurst, Andrews, Boyle, Williams (This spot was mostly between Williams and Mayle, Williams is a closer TE to Hayden Hurst, so he sticks around for the first few weeks to replace Hurst for injury, then who knows)

OL – Stanley, Lewis, Skura, Yanda, Brown, Hurst, Bozeman, Eluemunor (Bozeman’s strong play inside earned him a spot and Eluemunor’s ability to play T likely kept him around over fellow 2017 draft pick Nico Siragusa)

DL – Williams, Pierce, Urban, Henry, Ricard, Wormley, Sieler (Carl Davis and Bronson Kaufusi’s tenure with the team comes to an end, while the final pick of Ozzie’s career gets his shot to make an NFL impact.  Wormley had a somewhat strong final preseason game, but mainly makes it based on being a year younger than Kaufusi)

LB – Suggs, Judon, Williams, Bowser, Smith, Mosley, Young, Onwuasor, Board (McClellan not with the Ravens for first time since 2010, but Board’s potential wins him a job, and also signals that Young’s knee injury may not be serious)

CB – Carr, Humphrey, Young, Averett, Canady, Williams (Darious Williams is the surprise keep, he didn’t show a whole lot in the preseason, but was a very accomplished CB out of UAB.  Stanley Jean-Baptiste had this spot until he broke his forearm in the final preseason game)

S – Weddle, Jefferson, Clark, Levine (Thought Kai Nacua might make it in Jean-Baptiste’s spot, but that goes to a true CB)

ST – Tucker, Koch, Cox (Kaare Vedvik had impressed enough to cultivate some debate about him making the roster instead of Koch, but he instead gets designated for the Non-Football Injury list, which is very uncommon and we have yet to find out what happened to land him there)

The players who were cut today are now passed through waivers, which teams can make through tomorrow.  Players that are not claimed are immediately free agents and, if they meet the Practice Squad requirements, are free to sign with any team’s practice squad.
